Lincoln’s Lieutenants

Lincoln’s Lieutenants: The High Command of the Army of the Potomac
Stephen Sears
Hardcover; 896 pages
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt  (2017)

Lincoln’s Lieutenants by Stephen Sears is a comprehensive leadership history of the Army of the Potomac focusing not on tactics, but on the generals, their varied personalities, and professional interactions. Battlefield details are kept to a minimum, resulting in a limited number of maps that are difficult to read. Otherwise, the text is well-written and the author does a fine job depicting the trials and tribulations Lincoln had in finding the right general to lead the army.
