Stonewall Jackson Casket Flag

Casket Flag

The first produced model of the second National Flag of the Confederacy, as adopted in 1863. The flag was originally intended to fly over the capitol building in Richmond but was used instead to drape the casket of Stonewall Jackson as it lay in state in May 1863. Maintained in the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy, the flag was publicly displayed for a brief period during the 150th anniversary of Jackson’s death.

  1. “It’s length to be double the width” as per ratification of CSA Congress. This created problems with flying gracefully, as a flag waves better at two-3rds width to length (I.E. 3’x5′). It was not very popular. Some say it looked to much like a flag of surrender, navel said it got too dirty too quickly with the new steam ships acquired by the South.
